History Camps
History camps are offered during the summer for students in grades second through fifth
grade.  Camp subjects change yearly and include French & Indian War, Pioneer Life,
C&O Canal, Early Transportation, Upstairs-Downstairs and more.  Re-enactors, field trips,
hands on projects, and time period foods transport participants to another era.
Advance registration required.

Field Trips

Students will explore a 1867 Second Empire home that is furnished as an upper middle
class family and their servants would have lived in the late 1800s and early 1900s. 
Hands-on programs offer opportunities to experience the customs and traditions of the era.

  • Third Grade
    "For Purpose or Pleasure" - Students will learn through a story and tour of the museum the role quilts have played in family life of the late 1800s.  Each student will design a quilt square for a classroom quilt and make a quilt design bookmark.  Approximate time required is 90 minutes.

    Celebrate the 200th Anniversary of the National Road – All day field trip includes a visit to the Tollhouse on National Highway where students will see how the tollhouse keeper lived and worked at the only tollhouse on the National Road in Maryland still standing. Depending on class size approximately ½ hour. Choose between two locations - Queen City Transportation Museum (210 S. Centre Street, Cumberland) where students will map out their journey on the National Road, pack for the journey, and make a covered wagon or Gordon-Roberts House where students will hear the story of a family traveling westward and the memory quilt they made, make a classroom quilt and stencil a quilt bookmark. Approximate time for Queen City Transportation Museum – 2 hours; Gordon-Roberts House – 1 and ½ hours.

  • Fourth Grade
    "A Child's Life" Students will experience the life of a child living in the Gordon-Roberts House in the late 1800s.  Includes a parlor or outdoor game, tour, and the 1800s "Hard Rock Cafe" - the tea room.  Approximate time required is 90 minutes.
    Classes may schedule a tour only of the home.  Approximate time required is 45 minutes.

    Experience a Day in a One-room School House – Students will participate in the school curriculum of the time period, play typical recess games, participate in a spelling bee, role play as a child from different family backgrounds (farmer, coal miner, etc.) and enjoy a snack served in a tin pail. Pre-visit materials will be sent to teachers.
    Cumberland Goes to War – Faces of WWII – November 1 -4.  Students will discover how code breakers, spies, war dogs, Tuskegee Airman and women contributed to the Armed Forces.  Hands on activities will allow students to explore the roles of each segment.

  • Fifth Grade

  • Seventh and Eighth Grade
    Cumberland Goes to War – Operation Footlocker – Hands-on exploration of WWII artifacts. Students will explore primary source documents and artifacts to learn about WWII. Available for classroom or museum site.
  • K-Third Grade
    Trunk Show-- A costumed docent will bring to the classroom a trunk full of household items, clothes, toys, etc. for a hands-on experience.  Approximate time required is 30 minutes per class.
     
    ** Two additional sites available for field trips are the Thrasher Carriage Museum (tours only) and the Queen City Transportation Museum (hands-on programs).

Victoria Mouse House Tour
Young visitors will meet Victoria Mouse, The Gordon-Roberts House puppet, and help her
gather items to pack for a trip. Items Victoria will need for her trip are pictured on a handout
allowing young visitors to look for those items as they tour the museum.
